Are hemorrhoids genetic?

Updated: January 9, 2022

A lot of conditions are passed down from parents and unfortunately in many such cases, little can be done to avoid developing these conditions. If you suffer from hemorrhoids, you may be concerned whether your genes have something to do with it. This article will answer the question ‘are hemorrhoids genetic’ along with others like what treatment options are available for you.

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids, alternatively known as piles are swollen veins found in the anal or rectal canal. Hemorrhoids that develop in the anal canal or anus are known as external hemorrhoids while those in the rectal canal are referred to as internal hemorrhoids. In some instances, internal hemorrhoids protrude outside the anus when pushed out during bowel movements and these are known as prolapsed hemorrhoids.

Another type is a thrombosed hemorrhoid which refers to a hemorrhoid with a blood clot in it. The presence of a blood clot means that blood in the hemorrhoid cannot flow so a lot of pressure builds up inside it and causes a lot of pain.

What are the Symptoms of Hemorrhoids?

To ascertain whether you have hemorrhoids, you’ll need to look out for certain symptoms. These symptoms differ according to the various types of hemorrhoids.

The symptoms of external hemorrhoids are as follows:

  • A feeling of itchiness or irritation around the anus
  • Feeling a hard lump(s) around the anus as you wipe
  • Pain, especially as you pass stool or right after
  • Bleeding that you see on the toilet paper as you wipe yourself or in the toilet

The symptoms of internal hemorrhoids include:

  • Painless bleeding that you notice on the toilet paper after bowel movements or on the stool in the toilet. The rectum lacks pain receptors that’s why bleeding is painless
  • Prolapsed hemorrhoids

The symptoms of thrombosed hemorrhoids are:

  • Extreme pain
  • A feeling of immense pressure on your hemorrhoids
  • Bleeding when the hemorrhoids eventually burst that is immediately followed by a feeling of relief. Read more HERE.

What Causes Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids occur when the blood vessels in the anus and rectum are subjected to so much pressure that they end up swelling with a backlog of blood. This can happen due to the following reasons:

Straining During Bowel Movements

Pushing too hard to pass stool puts a lot of strain on the anal and rectal blood vessels and if it happens one too many times, hemorrhoids occur.

When you advance in age, the muscles in your rectum and anus weaken just like many other body parts. This makes the area very vulnerable to even the slightest strain and that’s why half of people over the age of 50 years are more likely to have hemorrhoids.

The weight of the fetus gets very heavy towards the end of the pregnancy and this can lead to various complications. One of them is that the baby weight sits on major veins that facilitate blood flow between the heart and lower regions of the body. This leads to swelling of veins which includes those in the rectum and anus. More information HERE.

Are Hemorrhoids Genetic?

The above-mentioned causes are some of the leading causes of hemorrhoids. Genetics is also a possible cause of hemorrhoids. If you have family members that have hemorrhoids, you have a higher chance of having them too. One reason for this could be that in your family line, people may tend to have weaker blood vessels. This means that if your anus and rectum are subjected to pressure, it’s much easier for you to develop hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids Treatment

To find relief from the discomfort of having hemorrhoids, you can go the home-remedy way or the medical way.

Home Remedies

Tea Bag

Tea leaves are rich in tannic acid which has anti-inflammatory properties. Placing a wet tea bag dipped in warm water on your hemorrhoids will soothe pain, itching, and help the inflammation go down.

Coconut Oil

Coconut is a powerhouse when it comes to moisturizing. Applying it to hemorrhoids will soothe the pain, inflammation, and itchiness.

Warm Water

Soaking in warm water has a very soothing effect on irritation and pain. It also boosts blood circulation so inflammation is reduced as a result.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera gel is a powerful anti-inflammatory compound. If you apply it to hemorrhoids, it will reduce pain, itchiness, and inflammation.

Ice is commonly used on injuries because it can shrink blood vessels, treat pain, inflammation, and irritation. Wrap ice in a cloth and press it on the hemorrhoids for a few minutes and you’ll find relief.

H-Hemorrhoids Formula

The H-Hemorrhoids Formula is a highly effective product you can use on all four types of hemorrhoids. It will provide you with fast pain relief and shrinkage of hemorrhoids. It is made with natural homeopathic ingredients so they won’t cause you harmful side effects.

Medical Treatment

This is a surgical procedure where the hemorrhoids are incised and the swollen blood vessels in them are removed. Hemorrhoidectomy is done on large hemorrhoids that keep recurring even after treatment. It’s a painful procedure that requires you to be put under anesthesia.

This is a simple procedure that can be done in a doctor’s office without the need to numb the area. A chemical that shrinks the hemorrhoid is injected into it.

This is also an office procedure where a rubber band is put at the bottom of the hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply. Without oxygen and nutrients, it eventually shrinks away.

This is a surgical procedure and it’s done on prolapsed hemorrhoids. It involves the use of surgical staples and a stapling device to stick back the hemorrhoid in the rectum. Stapling actually causes the hemorrhoid to shrink so it’s a classic case of killing two birds with one stone.

The good news about hemorrhoids is that they are treatable so even if you were doomed by your genes to get them, there’s a way out! Read more here: How to treat hemorrhoids! Four simple steps!
