Can hemorrhoids be removed?

1 in every 20 Americans has piles or also known as hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are swellings in the veins of the rectum and the anus that cause itchiness, pain, bleeding, and discomfort while sitting down. Can hemorrhoids be removed? If yes, then how? Find the answers to these questions in this article along with how hemorrhoids are diagnosed.

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are typically found on the lower part of the rectum and under the skin that surrounds the anus. The former are known as internal hemorrhoids while the latter are called external hemorrhoids. Sometimes, internal hemorrhoids protrude out of the anus and such a hemorrhoid is referred to as a prolapsed hemorrhoid. In other cases, a blood clot forms inside either an external or internal hemorrhoid. This is a thrombosed hemorrhoid.

The main cause of hemorrhoids is repeated straining in the toilet due to constipation. This is because the struggle to pass stool presses on the veins of the anus and rectum and the blood in them doesn’t flow freely so they distend. Other factors that put a lot of pressure on the blood vessels so that they form hemorrhoids are pregnancy, excess body weight, sitting for extended periods, and diarrhea. People with a family history of hemorrhoids are at higher risk of developing hemorrhoids. Getting older also leads to the weakening of the connective tissue that supports the anus and rectum and so any pressure exerted on their blood vessels can result in hemorrhoids.

Diagnosing Hemorrhoids

Self-diagnosing hemorrhoids requires you to look out for symptoms such as swelling, pain, itchiness, and bleeding around the anal and rectal region. However, a misdiagnosis is possible and you may confuse hemorrhoids for other conditions such as anal skin tags or anal fissures. To be sure, getting a diagnosis from a doctor is advisable.

For hemorrhoids that are easily visible around the anus like external hemorrhoids, a doctor only needs to perform a physical exam to diagnose them.

However, hemorrhoids that are further up the anal canal or rectum need a digital rectal exam . The doctor inserts a gloved and lubricated finger up the rectum to feel for growths or polyps.

When the doctor needs to see the hemorrhoids inside the rectum, an anoscopy is performed. The doctor inserts a lighted tube (an anoscope) into the rectum to see clearly.

When symptoms indicating the possibility of another condition such as growths in the bowel are detected, a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy is done. The doctor uses a thin and flexible tube with a camera and light at the end to insert and see the rectum and the lower part of the colon.

Can Hemorrhoids Be Removed?

Hemorrhoids can be removed by a doctor or surgeon through the following procedures:

  • Hemorrhoidectomy – In this procedure, a surgeon makes cuts at the sides of the hemorrhoid and then removes the offending blood vessels.
  • Sclerotherapy – The doctor injects medicine that causes the hemorrhoid to shrink.
  • Rubber Band Ligation – This method involves a tight rubber band being tied on a hemorrhoid. Since its blood supply is cut off, it eventually dies and falls off.
  • Hemorrhoidopexy – This is a procedure done on prolapsed hemorrhoids. A surgeon uses surgical staples to attach them back to the rectum.

How to Do It Naturally

Hemorrhoids don’t have to be removed unless they have become bothersome and refuse to respond to other treatments.  Otherwise, they can be treated using simple natural remedies such as:

Soaking in Warm Water

This is a very effective method of soothing the pain, swelling, and itchiness of hemorrhoids. It also improves blood circulation so the swelling goes down and healing is facilitated. To it even more effective, add Epsom salts into the bathtub or sitz bath of warm water before soaking in it.

Aloe Vera

The anti-inflammatory benefits of aloe vera gel due to its tannins will ease the inflammation, pain, and itchiness that characterize hemorrhoids.  Extract the gel from a fresh leaf and apply it to the hemorrhoids.

Cold Compress

Ice reduces inflammation, pain, and itchiness of hemorrhoids by shrinking your blood vessels. Press an ice pack wrapped in a cloth on the hemorrhoids to treat these symptoms of hemorrhoids. Do it for 15 minutes at a time and you’ll find relief.

Take Fiber

Constipation is one of the major causes of hemorrhoids so eating plenty of fiber will help in reducing it. Foods that are rich in fiber like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains will help in digestion, add to the bulk of stool, and soften it for easier bowel movements.

Drink Water

Water is very instrumental in softening stool and reducing constipation. Drink between 6-8 glasses of water a day and you won’t have to worry about straining in the toilet.

Don’t Sit for Too Long

Sitting for too long stretches out the blood vessels in the anus and rectum so that they start distending and bulging out. Don’t let yourself get so engrossed in work or TV that you remain seated the entire day. Taking a book or your phone to the toilet with you also encourages you to sit there for too long. Remind yourself to take a break and walk around every few hours.

Exercise

Doing exercises helps in stimulating bowel function so you won’t suffer from constipation. Make a point of keeping yourself active every day.
