Hemorrhoids vs skin tags

Updated: August 9, 2023

Coming across bumps or growths in your anal region should not be your everyday experience; this is out of the ordinary and they may either be hemorrhoids or skin tags. This article will look at hemorrhoids vs skin tags and help you identify the difference between them. You will learn what they are, what causes them, and how you can easily get rid of them at home.

What are Anal Skin Tags?

Skin tags are non-cancerous growths on the surface of the skin that are either flesh-colored or slightly darker. They are usually found in places where there are skin folds such as the neck, armpits, groin, eyelids, and the underside of breasts. Skin tags that grow around the anal or rectal area are known as anal skin tags. They are usually small, measuring only a few millimeters. Anal skin tags are mostly harmless and can often go unnoticed. However, for some people, they can be uncomfortable, sensitive, and itchy.

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels either around the anus or inside the rectum. Those around the anus are known as external hemorrhoids while those inside the rectum are internal hemorrhoids. The symptoms that accompany hemorrhoids include inflammation, discomfort, itchiness, pain, and bleeding. They are very common since 75% of people in the U.S. have experienced its symptoms at some point in their lives.

Hemorrhoids vs Skin Tags

Since both hemorrhoids and anal skin tags are swellings in the rectum and anus, it’s easy to confuse one for the other. As much as they are similar, differences also exist between them. Skin tags are mostly flesh-colored while hemorrhoids are much darker with some types like thrombosed hemorrhoids even being bluish or purple. While skin tags are rarely mildly uncomfortable, hemorrhoids are often painful, especially after bowel movements. Hemorrhoids result in rectal bleeding when they have been irritated but skin tags don’t bleed unless they sustain an injury. Once formed, skin tags don’t get any bigger than they are but hemorrhoids can grow in size over time.

What Causes Anal Skin Tags?

Skin tags are mainly found in areas of friction on the skin. Anal skin tags, therefore, develop when there’s friction in the anal region because of exercise, tight clothing, or sitting for too long. They may also develop because of frequent wiping using rough toilet paper, diarrhea, and constipation. Anal skin tags may also develop because of hemorrhoids. When hemorrhoids heal and their swelling goes down, the skin may not shrink with it so it remains loose and forms a skin tag.

What Causes Hemorrhoids?

Blood vessels in the anus and rectum swell with blood when they are under too much pressure. The pressure hinders the proper flow of blood to and from the heart and this creates a backflow of blood in these vessels. Pressure on the rectal and anal and rectal regions is caused by factors like frequent straining during bowel movements, being overweight or obese, pregnancy in its later stages, sitting for too long, and the wearing out of the supportive connective tissue between the rectum and anus due to aging.

What are the Treatment Options for Anal Skin Tags?

Castor Oil

Castor oil can be used in the treatment of anal skin tags because it can drain all the moisture out of them and kill them in the process. You can make a paste to apply on the skin tag by mixing half a spoon of castor oil with half a spoon of baking soda. Apply the paste thrice a day and the tag will fall off in 15-30 days.

Apple Cider Vinegar

The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar makes it an effective remedy against skin tags because it attacks their tissues until they are gone. Before you apply it on your skin, clean the affected area first. Dip a cotton ball into apple cider vinegar and place it on the skin tag for 5 minutes and then clean the area again. Do this thrice a day until the skin tag dies and falls off.

Pineapple

Pineapples have natural acids that can help in breaking down the tissues of anal skin tags. Dip a cotton ball into freshly extracted pineapple juice and apply it on the skin tag. Wash it off after one hour and repeat the process three times daily until the skin tag falls off. You can alternately use lemon juice which has even more powerful acids.

H-Skin Tags Formula

H-Skin Tags Formula is a natural and gentle remedy for all types of skin tags, including sensitive areas like the anal area. It’s made with pure homeopathic ingredients that gently flake away skin tags without leaving behind scars.

What are the Treatment Options for Hemorrhoids?

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is a herb that has been used for ages to soothe irritations and reduce inflammations. It’s available in local drugstores or online either in liquid form or in other products like creams, soap, and wipes.

Warm Bath

Warm water is very effective in soothing pain, improving blood flow, and reducing inflammations. Soaking in a bathtub or sitz bath for 15 to 20 minutes after bowel movements will help you feel better.

Ice Pack

Compressing ice on your hemorrhoids will help in reducing pain, inflammation, and even bleeding. This is because it helps in shrinking blood vessels. Press the ice pack while wrapped in a towel on the hemorrhoids for 15-20 minutes.

H-Hemorrhoids Formula

H-Hemorrhoids Formula is a 100% natural remedy that reduces the symptoms of all kinds of hemorrhoids. It will shrink the hemorrhoids and provide fast relief within moments of applying it.

Essential Oils

Most essential oils have properties that will help in reducing the inflammation, bleeding, pain, and the healing process. The most effective essential oils you can use on hemorrhoids are peppermint oil, frankincense, tea tree oil, cinnamon bark oil, and clove oil. You only need a few drops of these essential oils and you should dilute them in a carrier oil to counter their powerful concentration that could irritate your skin.
